Human: Handle with Compassion!

If you are struggling to change your eating behaviour, it's not your fault because Diets Don't Work (otherwise the last one would have).

At Attentive Weight Management it is Dr Lyn's view that if you haven't been educated to understand your eating behaviour that you are being unwittingly set up for failure....

What is Mindful Eating?

Mindful Eating asks us to tune into our bodies, recognise hunger and fullness cues, and become aware of the emotional and environmental factors that influence our food choices (Kristeller, 2020).

What are the benefits of Mindful Eating?

  • The Scientific Support

When individuals learn the skills of mindfulness and mindful eating, research suggests they develop a healthier relationship with food, change unhealthy habits, achieve modest weight loss and improve well-being (Kristeller, 2020).

  • What else have you tried and why hasn't it worked?

Dieting, the use of appetite suppressant drugs, and weight management surgeries undoubtedly assist individuals to achieve desired weight loss outcomes. However, in the absence of mindfulness and mindful eating skills, these interventions may only offer temporary relief, particularly if they fail to teach you how to change unhealthy habits of overeating.

  • Why Learn the Skills of Mindful Eating?

For individuals with unhealthy overeating habits: Mindfulness Matters. Research has shown that individuals, who gain mindfulness and mindful eating skills, reduce emotional and binge eating behaviours (Kristeller et al., 2014; Pepe et al., 2023), experience less stress, anxiety and depression; more more positive emotions, (Hooker et al., 2022; Kristeller, 2020; Kristeller & Hallett, 1999), make positive lifestyle changes (Kristeller, 2020; Winiarz et al., 2023); and achieve modest weight loss (Mason et al., 2016).

How does it work?

Mindful eating teaches you how to change unhealthy overeating habits.

  • You cannot change what you cannot see! Firstly, mindful eating provides you with the skills to recognise your unhealthy habits of overeating.

  • Next, it shows you how to use your own, inner wisdom to change unhealthy habits. For example, one of Dr Lyn's clients stopped her habit of eating a whole box of Cheezels because after mindfully eating 5 of them, she realised that she no longer liked or wanted them. Why? Because they were too salty. Mindfulness is key, because when you are mindful you are not mindless. It's only when you are mindless that you will find yourself at the mercy of your habits.

  • Finally, it teaches you how to start trusting your own inner wisdom for advice, instead of continually falling under the spell of your old habits or the temptation of the latest fad diet. All of Dr Lyn's clients learn how to how to kick the old habit of "eating everything on their plates because they were told to as a child". How?? Because, when they learn how to eat mindfully, they recognise that it feels better to eat less than it does to eat more. All your brain needs to make the switch from unhealthy to healthy is to recognise that there is a bigger, better offer to be had. And if this bigger, better, offer is to feel better by eating less, it's going to want to take you in this direction!

  • When you learn the skills of mindful eating you learn how to flick the switch of awareness that gives you the choice: mindful director of your life or mindless slave to your overeating habits? When you learn how to be present with mindful eating: you get to make a choice.

  • When you learn how to mindfully pay attention to your overeating habits; you learn how to create a vital and vibrant lifestyle instead of mindlessly enabling a dull and unhealthy one! What are you waiting for??
